Elder Ebong is just one of the many elders on the "Adopt an Elder Program." When we first arrived on mission President Wood called me into his office and told me of several elders that were not receiving much, if any mail from home. There were many reasons which included their family not having computers or not being able to write or even finances. He asked me to do something about it. At first I thought, how can I write to 19 elders at the same time. That night I went to my knees and asked Heavenly Father what he would have me do. Before even opening my mouth to pray the thought came to me in regards to the AAEP. I assembled a profile on each of the elders and was going to send it out to my e-mail list. I told my daughter Kami about the project and she asked if I would send her the list. She took it to Relief Society and within minutes the sisters choose an elder they wanted to adopt. In the meantime, Sister Angie Simpson, whose son Elder Cody Simpson is serving here, found out from Sister Wood that we were running this program and volunteered her help. Several families from Hooper, Utah have been participating. Thus far we have had over 30 elders go through the program. These wonderful families have not only written letters, e-mail and Skyped with their "Adopted Son's" on Mother's Day and Christmas but have made sure of their every need. What a blessing for the elders and the families. There will be relationship forged for an eternity. Elder Ebong is proud of his new shoes his family bought for him and holds a box sent in the mail. THANK YOU FAMILIES FOR YOU GENEROSITY!!! |
